That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Sugar Land Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Guardsman-compatible register and grille cleaning across Sugar Land, with typical whole-system service ranging from $340 to $520 for a standard single-family home and most jobs completed in a single scheduled visit. Guardsman registers, common in homes built 2015 to 2022 throughout First Colony, Telfair, and Riverstone, use a proprietary louver geometry that traps debris differently than standard builder-grade grilles. Homeowners usually discover the problem when airflow drops at one register, a musty smell localizes to a single room, or they remove the grille for routine cleaning and find compacted dust cake behind the faceplate that won’t vacuum free.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman registers fall into three series that matter for cleaning and compatibility: the GRM-100 residential line (4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 inch faceplates), the GRM-200 commercial-spec line with reinforced damper boxes, and the discontinued GRM-90 builder series used heavily in 2016 to 2019 Sugar Land construction. The GRM-100 and GRM-200 share the same snap-fit retention clips, but the GRM-90 uses a friction-fit tab that cracks if forced. Check the raised mold mark on the grille face, usually at the 6 o’clock position, or measure the duct boot opening behind the register rather than the visible faceplate, which overhangs by ¾ inch on all sides.

We clean OEM Guardsman grilles and stock aftermarket equivalents from Decor Grilles and Accord Ventilation where the original is damaged. The aftermarket dampers don’t match Guardsman’s 15-degree incremental adjustment, so we flag that trade-off in writing before work starts. Haven Standard Clause 1: written price before any panel comes off.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
  • Uneven airflow from one register while others blow normally. The Guardsman louver design uses a multi-angle vane that catches debris at the first bend. In Sugar Land’s humid Gulf Coast climate, that debris absorbs moisture and swells, creating a partial dam that standard vacuum attachments can’t reach without register removal.
  • Visible mold or dark staining on the grille face or surrounding ceiling. The GRM-100’s polymer formulation is prone to static cling in dry winter months, then biofilm adhesion when summer humidity spikes above 75 percent. The camera usually shows the growth starts 4 to 6 inches inside the duct boot, not on the visible surface.
  • Grille won’t snap flush after routine filter changes or cleaning attempts. The retention clips fatigue after repeated removal, especially on south-facing rooms where attic heat cycles the plastic. A loose grille bypasses conditioned air into the wall cavity, which our thermal camera picks up as a 8 to 12 degree temperature differential at the drywall.
  • Rattling or whistling that stops when you press the grille face. This is the damper blade, not the grille itself. Guardsman dampers use a coiled nylon pinion that gums with dust; forced cleaning without disassembly strips the teeth. We document this with the borescope before quoting repair versus full replacement.
  • Persistent room-to-room temperature difference of more than 3 degrees. The issue is rarely the HVAC unit. In Sugar Land’s First Colony homes, we regularly find a GRM-90 series register with the damper inadvertently closed during construction and never opened, buried under a decade of debris cake.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Scope Price Range
Single register/grille cleaning (accessible, no damage) $85 - $140
Whole-home register & grille cleaning (8-12 registers) $340 - $520
Grille replacement with OEM Guardsman equivalent $45 - $75 per unit + labor
Damper box repair/replacement (GRM-100/200) $120 - $190 per location
Documented Photo Record (included on every job) No additional charge

The range depends on register count, attic access difficulty, and whether the duct boot itself needs remediation. We don’t quote per-vent teaser prices. Every Sugar Land job gets one flat price per system, agreed in writing before work starts, with the 365-Day Done Right Promise backed in writing. Equipment on the truck includes Rotobrush, Nikro, and Guardsman-compatible tools.

What you can safely check: remove the grille by pressing the retention clips upward (GRM-100/200) or pulling straight out with even pressure (GRM-90). Vacuum the face and the first 2 inches of the duct boot with a soft brush attachment. If debris breaks free easily and the damper moves through its full range, you’re likely fine until your next scheduled service.

Where DIY goes wrong: forcing a stuck damper with a screwdriver strips the nylon pinion. Compressed air without containment blows debris deeper into the duct run. And in Sugar Land’s older slab construction, particularly in neighborhoods like Sweetwater, the duct boot is often flex-duct crimped to a metal collar; aggressive handling separates the connection, creating a leak into the wall cavity that won’t show until your summer electric bill arrives. We pull an inspection camera through every run we touch. Look at the photo first. Then we’ll talk about what needs to happen.

FAQs

How long do Guardsman registers last in Sugar Land’s climate?

The polymer grilles themselves typically last 12 to 18 years, but the internal dampers need attention every 5 to 7 years due to Gulf Coast humidity cycling. We document the condition of both components with photos during every service. Call (346) 421-3357 to schedule.

Can a damaged Guardsman grille be repaired instead of replaced?

Cracked faceplates and broken retention clips require replacement; gummed dampers can often be cleaned and re-lubricated if the pinion teeth are intact. We show you the borescope image and quote both options in writing before proceeding.

How long does a register and grille cleaning take?

A single register takes 20 to 35 minutes including documentation. A whole-home service with 8 to 12 registers runs 3 to 4 hours, with before-and-after photos delivered as part of the standard job record.

Do you stock Guardsman parts on the truck?

We carry cleaning equipment compatible with Guardsman, GRM-100 and GRM-200 grilles, and common aftermarket equivalents. Specialty colors or the discontinued GRM-90 series may require a one-day order. We state availability in writing when we deliver the price.

CleanRun Duct Repair & Cleaning is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Guardsman. We also stock parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems.
